$.99 sale today through Sunday

My memoir Leaving the Hall Light On: A Mother’s Memoir of Living with Her Son’s Bipolar Disorder and Surviving His Suicide went on sale today through Sunday for $.99 at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. We’re doing this promotion in honor of my participating in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s 16-18-mile suicide prevention Out of the Darkness walk in San Francisco on Saturday, May 21, and Mental Health Month.

I immediately shared this promotion on my Facebook pages and with a few Facebook suicide survivor sites. Plus many of my friends also shared. As a result I’ve gotten a few kudos from people I didn’t know had read it:

“This is a very good book. I encourage every survivor to read it.”

“Thank you for writing and sharing your book. It helped me so much. So much of what you wrote felt like I was saying it. Some things you wrote I was even afraid to admit to myself and yet you were strong enough to share. Thinking of all of you this weekend. Thank you.”

“A very striking, honest personal account of loss and healing… Madeline is walking for AFSP this weekend in memory of her son. Her book is on sale; I recommend it…”

A brand new five-star review also went up on Amazon yesterday:

A must read for any parent who is living through a child’s suicide. I lost my 26 year old son to suicide two and a half months ago. The book portrayed our lives for the past six years. It’s good to know you are not the only family dealing with this horrific disease.

Needless to say I’m stoked. Not only because of the wonderful comments, but also that it looks like this little promotion is working. My memoir has gone from a 145,000+ ranking on Amazon this morning to a 21,000+ ranking as I write this now. I’m hoping it will help people who have shared the kind of loss and grief I write about in my memoir, and will help those who read it. I said early on in my writing process: If this book helps one person it will be worth it. Thank you all for keeping the momentum of Leaving the Hall Light On going.
